About half of Australia's young teachers are resigning within five years of starting work because they have not developed enough resilience to cope with -
- difficult students,
- heavy workload
- and bad relationships with colleagues,
according to a study published by The Australian Journal of Education. Historical link preserved from the original page.
Many teachers begin and bounce from one short-term contract to another for some years when they previously thought the job was going to provide them with long-term career security, " said Melbourne University senior lecturer in psychology Dr Terry Bowles, the study's co-author.
They see friends and same-age peers in less demanding occupations, working less hard with shorter working hours with few underlying commitments.
